Pregnancy Acne: Causes, Prevention, and Natural Remedies

Pregnancy Acne: Causes, Prevention, and Natural Remedies

Pregnancy acne isn't a special form of acne. Some people simply seem to have trouble with acne during pregnancy. The likely culprit is an excessive production of oil (sebum) — which happens when the body produces greater amounts of certain hormones.

Pregnancy acne occurs–well, during pregnancy. The increase of hormones can lead to an excessive production of oil (sebum) which causes breakouts on the face. This acne can be stubborn, deep, and painful. Usually, it’s found around the mouth and chin. Here are the causes, ways you can prevent it, and natural remedies to heal hormonal acne.

 Causes

The main source of acne flare-ups is increased hormone levels in the first trimester of pregnancy. Your skin’s production of natural oils becomes at an all-time high. While it’s difficult to predict if you’re more prone to it or not, your risk increases if you have more active skin during your menstrual cycles.

 Prevention

To prevent hormonal and pregnancy acne, wash your problem areas with a gentle cleanser. Avoid excessive scrubbing and irritating cleansers. Shampoo regularly to avoid excess oils seeping into the skin. Never pick or squeeze at pimples which can impact scarring. Avoid tight clothing or hats if you’re prone to sweating.

Natural Remedies

Certain oils and remedies can prevent hormonal acne. Tea tree oil works great on acne-prone skin. Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) can also prevent hormonal acne from developing, similar to retinoids. Green tea is also great for decreasing inflammation. Drink a few cups to feel refreshed and give your skin that extra boost.
